Comment: Abstract: The thesis proposed is that it is possible, through a robust methodology: to reconstruct the broad construction processes which resulted in three examples of Roman private
construction; to provide economic reasons for the selection and organisation of those processes; and to draw some conclusions, quantitative and qualitative, about the economics or urbanism in Roman Italy from the first century BC to the
second century AD. This is supported by three case studies: at Pompeii, the House of Amarantus (Lix. 11 - 12), and at Ostia a row of tabernae (I.iv.1) and House of Jove and Ganymede (I. iv. 2). Construction is modelled using data obtained
from detailed standing building surveys of the case studies. Three-dimensional solid models are then produced using these data, and quantities of materials are extracted from these models. These quantities are then costed by reference to
construction economics manuals, primarily from 19th century Italy. The construction process is reconstructed from these quantities, and interpreted in the light of ethnohistorical and ancient literary sources. Decisions about the
construction process are examined, in the context of the cost of construction and factors such as the durability of materials and techniques.

Comment: Summary. In the best preserved sites of Italy - Pompeii, Herculaneum and Ostia - the technical provisions for waste removal appear to have differed in terms of construction as well as
distribution. Pompeii had many cesspits and a scattered network of sewers. Rainwater and waste water were mainly disposed of along the streets. Herculaneum had far fewer cesspits but a rather more systematic network of sewers. In addition,
rainwater and waste water were led out of the town there by way of the paved streets. Ostia had no cesspits at all, but a complete and uniform sewer system. The provisions of these three cities will be discussed and it will be shown that
the geologial underground and the gradient of the building land constituted the main reasons for the differences.

trovano confronti nell'immaginario sepolcrale contemporaneo, soprattutto ostiense.

Comment: Abstract. The shipwrights and shipyards in the ancient Ports of Ostia and Portus. From the list of members of the association of shipwrights of Portus and Ostia and further inscriptions
which provide information about the fabri navales and the associations of craftsmen co-operating with them (especially the stuppatores, restiones and pelliones), the high standing of the shipbuilding branch in the two harbour metropolises
at the estuary of the Tiber in the imperial period can be clearly appreciated. An almost insatiable demand for transport space and the constant obligation to maintain and repair the seagoing and river vessels brought a large number of
shipyards full order books and their owners great wealth and repute. However, unlike the vocational association of shipwrights in Ostia, the corpus fabrum navalium Portensium seems to have been subject to a direct state control already at
the turn of the 3rd century which is ascribable to the requirements of the state-operated supply of grain for the city of Rome.

7956710, website www.astromeditions.com. Abstract In March of 1997 a research project on the ancient synagogue began at Lund University, Sweden, continuing a tradition of research that has its roots in the 1930s. The project's title "The
Ancient Synagogue: Birthplace of Two World Religions" suggests that Judaism and Christianity existed for a time in close proximity to each other and were shaped by the same particular milieu within the ancient world, namely, the synagogue.
The synagogue in ancient Ostia was chosen as an initial case study, since there is evidence that it was built during the first century CE and consequently is one of the earlier synagogues in the Roman world to have been excavated. Olof
Brandt presents for the first time a more extensive description of the area outside the city walls where the synagogue was built. Anders Runesson surveys all the material that has been published about Ostia in order to make a new
reconstruction of the synagogue's history in Ostia. Magnus Zetterholm attempts, primarily with the aid of interpretative theories and general considerations, to sketch the relations in Ostia between Jews and Christians. His study poses
important questions about how to use sociological models in order to better understand the ancient synagogue. In a second contribution Anders Runesson discusses ritual washings in Ostia and in other synagogues in the diaspora. Karin Hedner
-Zetterholm presents a more general picture of Jewish congregations in Rome, and Sten Hidal analyzes what Roman authors of this period had to say about Jews, all in order to attain a better understanding of the life and activity in this
particular synagogue. The language environment at Ostia is elucidated in two studies, one by Georg Walser, dealing with the Jewish use of Greek in ancient Rome, the other by Per A. Bengtsson who gives a detailed presentation of the
surprisingly few Semitic inscriptions from Rome. Irene von Goertz-Wrisberg discusses what can be known about the synagogue worship service during this period in history and based on that knowledge reconstructs a Sabbath service in Ostia.
All the articles in the present volume set forth new understandings about the synagogue in Ostia and offer insights into the many methodological difficulties that lie in wait for every scholar who researches the ancient
synagogue.

Comment: By David Noy: Agnoli shows in a very well illustrated paper that sarcophagus production at Ostia was independent of that at Rome. Some pieces found at Ostia are clearly unfinished, and
must come from local workshops. Some items of apparently Ostian production were found at Rome and in Sardinia, Sicily, Spain and Africa, where they were presumably taken by ships which had delivered grain and oil to Ostia.

Comment: By David Noy: Bruun's article is based mainly on the evidence of stamped water-pipes. A newly published one shows the grant of a water-supply to the praefectus annonae of c.AD 62-70,
suggesting that the prefecture already had an established presence at Ostia by this date. In the second century, numerous officials are known with some variation of the title procurator annonae. Those entitled procurator portus utriusque
functioned at the harbours of Claudius and Trajan but not in the urban centre of Ostia. Tab.2 lists the pipes which are stamped with the names of imperial functionaries, and Tab.3 those with emperors' names, a total of about thirty-five
(about 45% of all stamped pipes at Ostia, a much higher proportion than at Rome). These show, contrary to what Meiggs believed, substantial activity by the Severan emperors. A lack of imperial stamps from the Flavians to Trajan may suggest
that local initiatives predominated for the water-supply of that period. Officials of the imperial financial administration were subsequently active in the Ostian water-supply, presumably overseeing public building projects as they did at
Rome. Although it is not discussed, this seems consistent with Heinzelmann's arguments, suggesting imperial involvement in the provision of an infrastructure which could not be left to local initiative.

Comment: Abstract. This article proposes the analysis of the so-called domus ostiensis I,XIV,3, a building that has been little studied. The study of this monument ð built around the middle of
the 2nd century AD ð consisted at first of the planning of its rooms: an important step towards its comprehension. Secondly, the location of the monument has been treated. Then the study proceeded with the description of the building by
indicating the various rooms (hypothesizing the functions of some of the rooms) and with the examination of the stones employed in the edification of the domus. The study of these materials was done with particular attention by macroscopic
and archaeometric analysis. Finally, before considering the complicated question of the various building phases of the monument, it was kept in mind that the new discoveries were useful in providing an indication of when it was built.
dell'edificio.

Comment: By David Noy: DeLaine shows how a very close analysis of building techniques and brickstamps can yield unexpectedly detailed information about the dating of buildings and about how Ostian
builders worked. She takes this approach further than she has done elsewhere, for example in her contribution to
'Roman Ostia' Revisited (London, 1996). In Insula 1.ix, three buildings
dated to c.114-118 prove to have been designed separately from each other and built by different contractors and workmen, even though they all used the same bricks; she takes this as clear evidence of rapid but piecemeal development. One
building in this insula, the Caseggiato del Larario, has distinctive L-shaped door jambs which seem to be the 'signature motif' of one contractor and can be found in buildings elsewhere in Ostia. Some of these buildings use different
materials, suggesting that it was the patron not the contractor who was responsible for providing or at least sourcing these. She calculates that each of the buildings could have been built by a contractor with eight to ten men and about
the same number of day labourers in a period of between two and five years, and she is thus able to reconstruct the unknown contractor's activities over several decades. The range of brickstamps found in some public buildings such as the
Forum Baths suggests that the sources of bricks were closely related to the patron's personal contacts; her assumption seems to be that obtaining sufficient bricks for a project was potentially problematic. A comparison between brickstamps
from the Caseggiato del Serapide and Case a Giardino in Region III suggests that the former had a patron from outside Ostia while the materials for the latter were acquired by the contractor himself (not a patron), perhaps for a speculative
development. Close examination of the Piccolo Mercato shows significant variations in techniques and materials, indicating that at least two teams of builders were at work although it was a single project; this could have been planned, or
the result of bringing in an extra team, perhaps because the first one was sacked or defaulted. There is much more in the article than can be summarized here. Although the evidence used is very specialized, the conclusions are potentially
wide-ranging for the understanding of business and employment in early second-century Ostia. Appendixes give full details of brickstamps from the buildings discussed, and investigate the chronology of the 'Capitolium' group of buildings
previously dated to c.120. Some text seems to have disappeared on p.97.

Comment: Resume.

Comment: By David Noy: Heinzelmann begins with a general survey of the building development of the 'Kleinstadt' up to the early imperial period. There was an unparalleled building-boom from the
time of Domitian and especially in the first half of the second century. The expansion led to the creation of an Ostian 'Trastevere', with a range of buildings, and the city's old population quickly became a minority among new arrivals. The
redevelopment relied on private capital and land, giving it a largely unsystematic nature and restricting the course and breadth of the streets and the homogeneity of the buildings along them. Many new storage buildings were erected in the
second century, most apparently by private enterprise and many with adjacent shops, showing that Ostia's commercial importance was not diminished by the creation of Trajan's harbour at Portus. Ostia was not only the port for supplying Rome
but also a focus of central Mediterranean commerce in its own right. The second-century building boom in the centre of Ostia was the result of private speculation based on heavy commercialization and seems to have pushed out the owners of
earlier small and medium-sized properties. While all this was going on, there was a significant lack of new public building. The infrastructure did not keep up with the rapid impact of the building of Trajan's harbour, perhaps because the
wealth was in the hands of newcomers who did not yet identify with the city.

Comment: By David Noy: Marini Recchia, Pacchiani and Panico study through documentary sources the nineteenth-century excavation of Ostia. The original plans of Abbot Fea for systematic
investigation and local display of the finds were replaced by treasure-hunting and licensed private activity. Marini Recchia is able to identify from the records some unprovenanced sculptures in the Vatican as Ostian. Cardinal Pacca was
responsible both for legislation in 1820 for the protection of 'Belle Arti' and, ultimately, for the dispersal of many of the most important finds from Ostia, which he had taken into his own collection, only some of which can now be traced.
The labour for the Vatican excavations of P.E and C.L. Visconti in 1855-70 was done by prisoners working in the non-malarial season between December and June; after 1870 the excavations of the new state Soprintendenza were partly a job-
creation scheme for the unemployed who were flocking into Rome. Proper documentation (although not as full as could be desired), and the study of Ostia as a whole, only began with the work of Lanciani in 1877-1889.

Comment: By David Noy: Olivanti continues the history of the excavations, which only resumed seriously with Vaglieri's appointment. Vaglieri's improvements included the establishment of a
photographic archive, and the article includes fourteen photographs from his period in charge. Olivanti argues vigorously for his importance in the development of Italian archaeology.

Comment: This book treats, of course, mainly urban multistoried-buildings, as f.e. the 'Insula' on the flanks of the capitoline hill. But on pp 217-228 are some observations on such buildings
outside Rome, i.e. mainly Ostia. There is a collection of epigraphical and literary evidence on the subject, and he treats in different places the meaning of the word 'insula', which is not only 'high apartment house'. That's why he used
such a lengthy, even in german not easily understandable title: research on multistorey buildings with apartments, and on Insulae in imperial Rome. There is an three-page-riassunto at the end.

Comment: Abstract. The synagogue at Ostia is one of the most important ancient synagogues. However, no final report from the excavations yet exists, which has left the field open for some debate
as to the origin and nature of the building. Apart from discussing matters of terminology and definitions, the present study provides a detailed analysis of the building's architectural development, relating it to other structures at Ostia.
It is maintained that the original edifice was public and monumental, containing a triclinium for common meals, and dated to the late Julio-Claudian period. The results of the analysis have implications for how we understand Jewish identity
as expressed in architectural form, as well as the relation between Jews and non-Jews in the Diaspora.

Comment: By David Noy: Salomies compares names from Ostia with those from Rome and (briefly) Aquileia, using a database of 6,900 Ostians with an identifiable nomen. Numerous tables provide a great
deal of raw data, not all of which is explained (he repeatedly points out that he is not an Ostian specialist): according to Tab.2, Egrilius was the second commonest nomen at Ostia but extremely rare at Rome, but there is no discussion of
this. Salomies highlights some surprising differences between Ostia and Rome, both in the prevalence of particular nomina and in the preferred combinations of praenomen and nomen. Over fifty nomina are found at Ostia and elsewhere but not
at Rome, and another fifty are found at Ostia and nowhere else. The praenomen Decimus and the cognomen Mercurius were surprisingly common at Ostia. Names suggest substantial immigration to Ostia from Africa. Twenty-three Ostian magistrates
have praenomen/nomen combinations which are not otherwise attested at Ostia, suggesting that their freedmen are not recorded in the city because the magistrates themselves were not resident there. These are particularly interesting examples
of how onomastics can give insights into aspects of social history which would not otherwise be recoverable.

Comment: By David Noy: Spurza finds a correlation between emperors' visits and imperial acitivity there in the first century, but not later, when there is no longer literary evidence for specific
visits by emperors. The Ostian building traditionally known as the 'Palazzo Imperiale' was probably the headquarters of a collegium. The nature of the possible 'Palazzo Imperiale' on the north-west side of Trajan's harbour at Portus is
still uncertain, but it could have been designed for housing important people who were passing through.

Comment: By David Noy: Valeri sets out to contrast groups of statuary found in baths at Ostia and Rome. The Porta Marina Baths had statues of Trajan, Hadrian and their relatives, but other statues
such as a series of Labours of Hercules which may be from the baths are of less certain provenance. The Baths of Neptune contained a high-quality statue of Septimius Severus, made at Rome. The Forum Baths had statues of Asclepius, Hygeia,
Fortuna and Isis, which Valeri thinks could come from one workshop. Later restorations there added statues of Valens and, probably, Ragonius Vincentius Celsus, praefectus annonae. The Ostian baths have an unexpectedly high number of
portrait statues of private individuals (usually unidentified), who were presumably benefactors.

Comment: Abstract. A 1999 survey of some 3,000 travertine building elements and other objects in Ostia demonstrated that this material was used for a variety of purposes, including as
cornerstones. Two functions for cornerstones are proposed here. While the cornerstones in Ostian buildings have often been regarded as buffer stones, there are strong indications that they were boundary stones used for the layout of
insulae. Cornerstones in small streets, constricted parts of streets, projecting buildings, and entrances of buildings were used as warning signals for passing traffic.

Comment: Abstract. The erection of two obelisks at Rome before 10 B.C. must be considered in connection with the erection of two obelisks at Alexandria 13-12 B.C. The comparison of all activities
around these events indicates, that a close co-operation of Romans and Egyptians took place from 15 B.C. onward. Before the first obelisk transport to Rome, Roman engineers and shipbuilders had the opportunity to study the Egyptian
transport technology on the Nile. Based on these experiences, the Roman navy was capable of constructing an appropriate ship for the transport of obelisks across the Mediterranean. Until now it was believed, that heavy, granite objects were
laid on top of ships at the stone quarries near Aswan and then brought northward. This assumption can no longer be upheld. Instead columns and obelisks were transported hanging in water between the two hulls of a double-ship. The loading of
a double-ship was easy and without using any power. The Roman obelisk-ship was composed of three interconnected ships. Two ships supported the obelisk, which hung between them in the water, and the third ship was centred between their bows.
The ship in front provided the streamlined water flow necessary at open sea, and also the propulsion. Of all Roman ship types the trireme appears best suited to be adapted to this role as an integral part of the obelisk-ship. As the result
of this investigation every detail contained in reports of Pliny, Suetonius and Ammianus corresponds to the construction of the hypothetical Roman obelisk-ship. Definite clues about the Roman double-ship technology give remarks on the
sinking of Caligula's obelisk-ship in the Portus near Ostia. A part of the former western mole, which consists of pozzolana concrete has to be interpreted as a platform built up on pillars above the obelisk-ship.

Comment: By David Noy: Zevi goes back to the supposed foundation by Ancus Marcius and hopes (perhaps rather optimistically) that new discoveries will resolve the differences between literary and
archaeological evidence. There are differences within the literature too: Livy thinks Ostia developed through salt-panning rather than as a port, as Ennius states. The moving coastline must have had a large effect on the location of ancient
as well as modern habitation, but Romans in the Augustan period were unaware of this and wrongly imagined continuity from the legendary foundation stories to their own day. The mouth of the Tiber was already under Roman control when Greeks
were settling in the Western Mediterranean. The archaic cult of Vulcan at Ostia probably belonged to the "pre-Hellenic" period, and the Dioscuri cult seems to be a local one going back to the establishment of the 'castrum' in the 4th or 3rd
century BC.

Comment: Abstract. The expansion and decay of cities are often contemporary phenomena. thus the first phase of collapse of multi-storey buildings in Ostia does not culminate at the end of the
ancient city-culture, but at the peak of the extensive urban crisis in the late third century, and during the birth and growth of the late-antique city in the fourth. Newly enhanced squares and malls were part of the street system of
pedestrian zones reorganized by a series of blocked-off roads and one-way-streets. A hitherto unknown horizontal zoning - a substitute for the vertical zoning of the former insulae - was marked by luxurious residential and recreational
quarters on the one hand and ruins, simple habitations and disposal sites on the other. This is evidence of how the dilemma of deserted commercial buildings and the problem of domestic security were overcome. Around the main streets,
squares and promenades a more representative city than ever arose, tailored to meet the entertainment-needs of the wealthy residents in the city, on the coast along the Via Severiana and in the country-side between Ostia, Portus and
Rome.

Comment: ISBN 3-89937-042-2. www.pfeil-verlag.de.

Comment: In AD 42, the Emperor Claudius initiated work on the construction of a new artificial harbour a short distance to the north of the mouth of the Tiber. The harbour facilities were enlarged
at the instigation of the Emperor Trajan at the beginning of the second century AD, and Portus remained the principal port for the City of Rome into the Byzantine period. The surviving archaeological remains and comments by ancient sources
make it clear that Portus lay at the heart of Rome's maritime fa‡ade. As well as being a key Mediterranean centre for passengers and for the loading, unloading, transshipment and storage of products from across the Empire, it was also
designed to make an ideological statement about the supremacy of Rome in the world. Portus is, thus, of key importance to understanding Rome and her relationship to the Empire. The project that forms the subject of this book was designed to
use non-destructive techniques of topographic and geophysical survey in combination with systematic surface collection to provide a new understanding of the plan of Portus. The work was undertaken between 1997 and 2002 as a collaboration
between the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici di Ostia, the British School at Rome, and the Universities of Southampton, Durham and Cambridge. This volume presents the full results of the survey and uses them as the basis for a re-
evaluation of the whole port complex. The geophysical survey results are interpreted in the context of earlier work at the site in order to offer new perspectives on the character and development of the site. 360p, 233 b/w illus, one fold-

Comment: This study takes the street plan of Ostia as the basis for an application of space syntax methodologies for the study of urban settlements. This provides a contrast to the application of
the method in recent work which has used space syntax to investigate the internal space of buildings (so called 'gamma analysis'). Here 'Alpha Analysis' is used to analyse the street network in order to provide a statistically validated
framework on which to base interpretations of the spatial arrangement of the town. Several spatially distinct areas are identified, and the dynamic between global through-movement and local knowledge is considered. This forms a preliminary
application of the theories and methodologies, and is very much a testing ground for building a PhD topic on the spatial investigation of Roman urban centres. Despite this, however, the results for Ostia stand alone, and provide a firm
basis on which all other archaeological data might be considered. The study concludes by considering some of the limitations of the method and potential ways forward, as well some of the implications for the more general study of Ostian
society.

Comment: Abstract. The unique peristyle building called the Domus Fulminata, generally dated between AD 65 and 75, is not a guild seat but a tripartite building with a private, religious, and
commercial function. As it is connected with a mausoleum, built c. 30 BC, and belonging in all probability to P. Lucilius Gamala (`senior'), it is very likely that the Domus Fulminata was constructed by one of his descendants, P. Lucilius
Gamala, duovir in AD 71. The Lucilii Gamalae may have honoured their famous ancestor by holding meetings on the masonry biclinium in the peristyle, and by sacrificing at the altar on the base between the couches, in front of the aedicula.
After the second century the core of the building was provided with marble decorations, just like the luxurious late Roman domus of the third and fourth centuries.

Comment: Abstract. In the Fasti and Alba Augustalium there appears the abbreviation dd following as a rule quinquennales title. There is general agreement that it should not be understood as short
for d(ecreto) d(ecurionum), but as d(ono) d(ato), although no definite proof thereof has been produced thus far. Drawing on the evidence of other usages of the abbreviation dd, the present writer shows that the interpretation d(ono) d(ato)
is the right one and explains the presence of such a formula at Ostia.
