Caseggiato degli Aurighi - room 17

In a room below a staircase (subscalare in Italian), numbered 17, a surprisingly large number of graffiti has been preserved. A function as latrine is to be expected, but of that there is not a single trace. The neighbouring understairs 16, where quite some plaster has been preserved as well, shows a few traces of graffiti at most. The graffiti have clearly deteriorated since the excavation in the late 1930's. A lot of plaster seems to have disappeared since the 1950's.

Many graffiti are mentioned by Della Corte and Ciprotti, but without mentioning the precise location, so that it becomes quite a puzzle to figure out what they saw in this room, and what elsewhere. Fortunately Solin remarks that their numbers 20-29 and 34-61 are from this room (Solin 1972, 195 note 2). The readings of Della Corte and Ciprotti are not to be trusted, but it must be said that sometimes the graffiti are simply very difficult to read.
