Caseggiato del Sole

Plan of the Caseggiato del Sole.

G0354 - MASTER SUN

- On the east wall of the fourth back room from the north = fourth back room from the south. This is also the outer west wall of the Mitreo dei Serpenti.
- Becatti 1954, 125-128: DOMINVS SOL | HIC AVITAT.
- Bakker 1994, 104, 110, 238.

Interpretation: Dominus Sol hic avitat = Dominus Sol hic habitat, "Master Sun lives here". The reference is to Sol-Mithras in view of the adjacent mithraeum.

G0355 - MONEY

- Location not specified.
- Solin 1967, Tav. 59b: ACCEPTI * XXV K(alendis) DECENB(ribus)

Interpretation: 25 denarii received on December 1st.

G0357 (container) - REGISTRATION OF MONEY

- On the west wall of the southernmost room of the east half. The texts are difficult to read, because they seem to be some sort of working notes, iincluding strike-through. There are several hands. The reading below obviously contains errors and is just a first suggestion (readings that are fairly obviously wrong are underlined; we must wait for the publication by Heikki Solin).

Interpretation: most of these graffiti are dates related to the receiving of money, given by men and women to different people. A year is not mentioned, it was apparently obvious. Sometimes text was cancelled by horizontal lines. Puzzling is the text "Hic tonat" (if the starting V is indeed an H; nr. 5), "On August 28 it is thundering here". A reference to a thunderstorm seems unlikely. Perhaps a quarrel is meant, or even an earthquake. If PRES in nr. 14 were to be developed in "presbyter", we may have to re-think DOMINVS SOL.
