Statue of the Pythian Apollo

He rests his right arm on the tripod, an appropriate symbol of his oracles. Coiled around the feet of the sacred utensil is the tame serpent. The chlamys which is fastened on his right shoulder, is thrown over the left arm and falls in long folds down his back. In the left hand there are traces of the bow. Perched on a rock at his feet is a winged griffin, intent on his every movement. Immeasurably superior to other kindred compositions both for its artistic worth and excellent state of preservation, this noble work which has every appearance of having been used as an object of worship, possesses a special interest and importance.
