Statue of an athlete

The figure which is after the style of that of Lysippus, represents an athlete who with hands uplifted is in the act of anointing his body before entering the arena. The artistic execution of the work brings out in full relief the exquisite outlines of the figure, which possesses in a remarkable degree that appearance of vigorous strength which was developed by the hardy sports of the palestra. Beside the right leg is the trunk of a palm-tree.
