Mosaic
General descriptionThere are no reports about the two rooms to the north of statio 23. The floors are today covered by grass. Statio 24 contained the first mosaic on the north side of the square. It has disappeared almost entirely. Finelli writes: "Questo spazio era limitato ad est e ovest da una fascia di lastre informe di marmi". According to a photo taken in 1931 (DAI, 1289_B05) and NADIS inv. nr. 642 the east side (the west side of statio 23) was bordered by a white marble band. On photos from 1914 and 1977, and NADIS inv. nr. 645, a band of marble slabs can be seen on the west side, on the area of statio 25.
TextIn a white leaf Calza read:
NF
As for statio 23, I suggest an alternative for N(aviculariis) F(eliciter). For a discussion see the section "The auxiliary grain fleet of Commodus".
Suggested reading:
N(AVICULARIIS) F(ELICITER)
and
N(AVICVLARI) F(RVMENTARI)
Depictions
Calza saw two leaves, one black on a white background, one white on a black background.
Masonry
The rear wall of the back room is of opus reticulatum, of which the west part is missing. The side walls are of opus latericium. The west wall has a double width.
Interpretation
The leaves may have had an apotropaic function.[1] For a further discussion of the two letters see the section "The auxiliary grain fleet of Commodus".
