Mosaic
General descriptionThe floor of the rear part of the back room has not been preserved. NADIS inv. nr. 644 shows a north-south running black band, dividing the back room in two halves. Only the north part had been preserved. It touches the north wall and is in exactly the same position as a band in statio 47. In the front part of the back room are some patches of white tesserae.
The floor of the west part of the front room has been preserved, containing a large depiction. It is surrounded on three sides by a wide, black frame: 28 tesserae on the south side, 14 on the north side, while the west side is not complete. The southern band has two irregular, white patches in the west part. This band is also on the area of statio 47. The northern band is not between stationes 45 and 46, but moved considerably to the south. On NADIS inv. nr. 644 a north-south running white band is shown in the centre of the western black band.
TextNo text has been preserved.
DepictionsIn the frame we see the lighthouse, two ships with raised sails - the left one going to the right, the right one going to the left -, and a dolphin swimming to the left. A few horizontal lines indicate the sea.
Becatti
Lighthouse.
Masonry
The back wall of the back room consists of two sections. The southern one-third is of opus latericium, the remainder of opus reticulatum. The sections meet with an irregular joint. The north and south wall of the room are of opus vittatum mixtum A (three layers preserved), with the north wall perhaps consisting of two sections. On Gismondi's plan the north wall does not reach the brick column, on the model it does.
Interpretation
The depictions in the front room are very similar to those of the various navicularii in the east portico. A striking difference is of course the absence of a text in the back part of the front room. It is beyond me why, through a black band, the front room of statio 46 was narrowed and that of statio 45 widened.
