    General description

The floor of the rear part of the back room has not been preserved. Here the model has a black frame. The floor of the east end of the back room and of most of the front room has been preserved, the east end of the front room is missing. On the north side the front room is bordered by a thin, black band, three tesserae wide. It ends against the base of the brick column in the centre and is slightly to the south of the axis of the column. On the south side is a black band, seven to eight tesserae wide, on the axis of the central column. At the west end it has a restoration of white tesserae. Partly in the back room and partly in the front room is a black frame with a depiction. The frame (three tesserae wide) has a curious north-east corner: the north side consists of two bands, ending irregularly, that do not join. It is almost as if the subterranean shockwave of an earthquake has lifted and dropped the mosaic, after which it was repaired without joining the two parts of the frame. In the central part of the front room is a marine scene.

    Text

    No text has been preserved.

    Depictions

In the frame (2.60 x 2.00) a Nereid is depicted. Next to hear is a trident. She holds a veil over her head. She is sitting on a rock, according to Becatti originally a sea creature that was mostly cancelled by restorations. She is flanked by two branches. The right one has thick side branches and a lozenge on the top. The left one has thin side branches, a P-shape and perhaps a lozenge on top. Becatti is thinking of the thyrsus with ribbons. However, the thyrsus only has ribbons at the top.

Below the Nereid is a marine scene. Two ships with raised sails approach the lighthouse. Below and to the left of the left ship is a dolphin swimming to the right. Some horizontal lines indicate the sea.

    Becatti
Nereid.

    Masonry

The back wall of the back room is of opus latericium. The room does not have side walls. On the plans of Vaglieri and Gismondi is the east end of a south wall, on the model a complete south wall. Between stationes 49 and 50 the shallow foundation of a dividing wall was found, the upper part of which has disappeared (excavations Pohl). On Vaglieri's plan a wall or bench can be seen that is set against the central part of the back wall, on the model a bench, the continuation of a bench in statio 48.

    Interpretation

The branches with thin and thick side branches may symbolize the absence of fruits in autumn and winter, and the appearing of fruits in spring and summer. For a further interpretation see statio 50.
