    General description

The lower level in the back room was investigated in 1913. Nothing was then reported about the layer above the lower level. The central west part of the floor of the front room has been preserved. The north end of the room has a wide band of white marble, of which the west and east part are lost. It is slightly to the south of the axis of the central column. The room is bordered on the south side by a thin band of white marble (on the axis of the central column), next to which, on its south side, is a black band, 3-4 tesserae wide. In the centre of the room is a geometric design, restored with black and white tesserae.

The east half of the lower floor of the back room has been preserved, with the exception of the edges. It contains a very wide black frame (18 tesserae wide), containing two further black frames with depictions. The wide frame is not in the centre of the back room, but moved considerably to the north. It is surrounded by white tesserae forming diagonal lines. Inside is a white band (5 tesserae wide). A black band (3 tesserae wide) then creates the first internal frame (outer meas. 2.95 x 2.40). On the east side of the black band stands the second internal frame (2 tesserae wide; outer meas. 1.36 x 0.98). The northern column and travertine plinth of the "Claudian phase" are standing on top of the design at the north-east corner. Whether the plinth is actually standing on top of tesserae cannot be ascertained.

    Text

    No text has been preserved.

    Depictions

The geometric design in the front room consists of alternating black and white squares and rectangles. There are extensive restorations with black and white tesserae.

In the frame in the back room are vegetative motifs. Below and in between is another frame with a standing figure and an animal. According to Becatti we see Diana holding a spear and a bow, and a deer. Shadows are indicated by horizontal lines.

    Becatti
Diana.

    Masonry

The back wall of the back room is of opus latericium with one row of oblong tufa stones, resting on opus reticulatum. A north wall of uncertain masonry, probably modern, only serves to bridge the difference in height with statio 56. There is no south wall. No fake, brick plinths have been preserved around the central columns.

    Interpretation

The mosaic is at the level of the Claudian phase. However, a column with a travertine plinth that has been assigned to this phase is standing on top of it.
