Mosaic
General descriptionThe floor of the back room is covered with earth. Nothing has been preserved of the floor of the front room. In the statio a mosaic depiction of a gladiator was found.
TextLanciani saw a text on either side of the helmet of the gladiator:
SPLENDO R‧L‧T
The O is smaller than the other letters. Before and after the second L is a dot. Lanciani proposes SPLENDOR L(aqueator) T(iro). A laqueator was a gladiator fighting with a lasso (laqueus) and a sword. A tiro was a rookie gladiator. Splendor was the name of the gladiator.
Suggested reading:
SPLENDOR L(aqueator) T(iro)
DepictionsLanciani describes the gladiator as a "hoplomachus" ("soldier"), wearing a helmet.
Masonry
The back wall of the back room and its north wall are largely hidden by shrubs. Some opus reticulatum of the back wall can be seen, and some opus vittatum simplex of the north wall. There is no south wall. On the plan of Lanciani the back wall is thicker than the neighbouring walls. On the plan of Vaglieri a second wall or bench is seen, set against the back wall. It is not present on the model.
The north-east central column of statio 60 is preserved to a height of 2.65 (the upper part was re-erected). Both central columns of statio 60 have remains of smooth stucco, from the travertine plinth to the top (excavation Pohl). No fake, brick plinths have been preserved around the central columns.
The foundation of a dividing wall between the back rooms of stationes 60 and 61 was found (excavation Pohl). The back room ended its existence at the Claudian level; whether it ever was at the final level cannot be said, due to late antique digging in the room (excavation Pohl).
Interpretation
The mosaic must belong to the latest period of the square, as a "mosaic graffito" (cf. statio 20).
