Who were buried on the Isola Sacra?
The earliest graves are located on the side of the channel.
During the reign of Claudius the deceased of Portus were buried east of the harbour, where later on the new harbour
of Traianus had to be built.
No sepulchre of rich people or men of standing have been
found on this necropolis. The tombs we know today were
meant for the local middle class, their servants, slaves and freedmen.
With the exception of a single sarcophagus, we don't find traces of Judaism or Christianity.
Also tombs of followers of other foreign religions are lacking.
Almost all 'inhabitants' of this necropolis were Roman
citizens and believers of the official Roman religion.
