TOMB 85a

click to enlarge photographDuring the excavation campaign of 1988-89 a small tomb
a cassone, called tomb 85a, has been found. The tomb is located in the most western part of the necropolis and runs parallel with the Via Severiana.
In a later time an aedicula has been attached on the long side, facing the Via Severiana. This aedicula has a triangular tympanum on which the following inscription has been found:

                          D   .   M
               P . SILANUS PROTUS
               APHRODITE PIENTISSIMAE
               BENE MERENTI FECIT
               VIXIT ANN XVII
               MENSIBUS V

The grave was built by Publius Silanus Protus for his very pious and devoted Aphrodite,
who passed away in the age of 17 years and 5 months.

Tomb 85a is now again covered with sand and can't be seen.
